History

a brief history of the congregation

Hope Lutheran Church began as a mission of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod under the Texas District Mission Board in the Fall of 1962. In January of 1963, Six acres were purchased near the intersection of FM 518 and 528. Hope dedicated its first sanctuary in September, 1964. Fellowship space, classroom space, and activities space were all added during the remainder of the decade. At the end of 1976, Hope had grown to 675 baptized members. And Hope continued to grow. A new administrative wing was built in 1976. By her 25th Anniversary, Hope had grown to 750 members. A new sanctuary was dedicated in 1994. The Center for Faith Development - a large building with much needed classroom and fellowship space was completed in 2003.

Hope Lutheran has been served by six Pastors since her inception: The Reverends Larry Rynearson, Robert Hobus, Dr. Peter Steinke, Ralph W. Hobratschk, Scott W. Kirchoff, Mark F. Lasch, and Jonathan E. Petering. Two Directors of Christian Education have served Hope as well: Steve Sonnenberg and Alan Gunderman. In addition we have been blessed with a number of excellent vicars and youth ministers.

Hope has given birth to one daughter, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Nassau Bay and has a close relationship with a sister congregation, Epiphany Lutheran in Pearland. God has richly blessed Hope and we pray that God continues to bless our efforts to build a reaching community with Christ and eagerly await his coming again in glory.
